I have a certain amount of contempt for standard/ old school publishing firms. I’ve got my own publishing company and I’m doing things differently. And, here are some reasons why I am up in arms against the stodgy bunch..

Some basic stats/ figures… the average Art Book costs (for you and for me) about 75$ in Chapters/ Barnies..

  • 55% (est) is given, off the top, to the retailer.
  • 2% (est) is given to distribution options.
  • 5% to 8% is given to the author/ artist.
  • The Rest belongs to the publishing company!

To make matters worse.. if you agree/ accept an advance on royalties, the aforementioned percentile based on a 2,500 average title sale, won’t even cover that advance. So, you are in debt to the publishing company. Unless your book goes “reprint” .. but, lately, publishing companies have been doing this really wonderful thing.. sitting on books till the author gives them up. Then, reprinted free and clear without having to pay any royalties!

Let’s do something different!!!
